Cllr Mike Nangle
Lord Mayor 2004/05 Deputy Lord Mayor 2005/06 Director of Stockfield Community Association March 1991 to July 2004. Honorary President of Stockfield Community Association 2008
Councillor Michael Nangle was born in Portadown. He lived his life in Derrymacash/Derrytrasna/Lurgan and went to the little village school in Derrymacash and then off to boarding school at St Coleman's College in Newry. He left Ireland in 1954.
Michael's first job in Birmingham was as a Conductor on the buses and then into Lucas Formans Road for two years. Michael then moved to work in Essex and lived in Great Dunmow and later nearby at Barnston.
Michael and his wife Margaret moved back to Birmingham and he again played a large part in the Trade Union movement being Chair of the senior stewards at Lucas for a number of years.
Mike became a Councillor in 1984 for Acocks Green until 1992. Then Hodge Hill in 1995. Mike worked tirelessly to bring about the redevelopment of the Stockfield Estate and the creation of the Community Association. Mike was nominated by Birmingham City Council as a founder Member and Director of the Stockfield Community Association in 1991. Mike remained on the Board until his duties as Lord Mayor made it impossible to carry out the onerous duties of both appointments. Mike rejoined the Board in 2005.
People asked why he wanted to be a Councillor. His answers are threefold.
1.Who would not miss a chance to be involved in the wonderful changes and improvements wrought in this City under the Leadership of Sir Richard Knowles, Councillor Theresa Stewart, Sir Albert Bore and aided by the support of Sir Bernard Zissman and Sir Neville Bosworth who each in their turn have been keen to keep the tradition of great innovation which was pioneered by Joseph Chamberlain?
2.It is a privilege to be able to help people with their problems.
3.It has been an education for him to find himself in the position of the minister in the TV programme “Yes Minister” trying (sometimes successfully) to unravel the work of the “Sir Humphreys” in departments. There has been exasperation mixed with amusement but after nineteen years he thinks he is getting the hang of it.
